Happy New Year!

It’s not looking as though there will be a Seven Day Spotlight post for this week as, at the time of posting this, I’ve only bought (shock, horror) one book!  This is most unusual – perhaps I am suffering from chocolate overload and it’s addled my brain.  The book in question is Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal by Jeanette Winterson, a book which has been on my wish list for a few years, since I saw her speak at the Off the Shelf festival actually, when the book was first released.

In 1985 Jeanette Winterson’s first novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, was published. It was Jeanette’s version of the story of a terraced house in Accrington, an adopted child, and the thwarted giantess Mrs Winterson. It was a cover story, a painful past written over and repainted. It was a story of survival.

This book is that story’s the silent twin. It is full of hurt and humour and a fierce love of life. It is about the pursuit of happiness, about lessons in love, the search for a mother and a journey into madness and out again. It is generous, honest and true.

This is also a good opportunity to say thank you to you all for reading during my first two months of blogging.  My most popular review posts have been for Tattletale by Sarah J Naughton and The Mountain In My Shoe by Louise Beech, two excellent books.  I’m looking forward to reading lots more fantastic books in 2017 and talking with you all about them.

In the meantime I’d like to wish you all a very Happy New Year!

  • Happy New Year Twinnie! Is this the start of things to come – no book buying 😱
Can you check and see if I’ve fallen off your list again, I’ve had no emails about posts 😞

    • Happy New Year to you too my Book Twin! Do you really think I am going to be able to stop buying books? I’m sure it’s just the Christmas/New Year lull.

You’re on my list of WordPress followers – do you get an email if you’re one of those?

  • Have a great New Year! Your one purchase is a book that has been on my wishlist for a while too – I hope it’s as good read as I expect!

  • Happy New Year Nicola.
Whilst I thought Christmas Days (by this author) was only quite good, I was left thinking that I would like to read more about the author.
I read Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit a long time ago, but think it went over my head. I might try it again before reading this one.

    • Happy New Year, Caroline.
I’ve tried Oranges twice and neither time have I been able to get into it or enjoy it. So I don’t know whether Why Be Happy will work for me or not, but I read a bit of the sample and it really appealed. I did love Christmas Days though.
