#BookPost #TheGirlsOfSummer by @katiebishopwrites #BookPost #TheGirlsOfSummer by @katiebishopwrites

Thank you Bantam Press/Transworld for this fabulous book post which will be published in May 2023. It sounds amazing and what a cover! 🥳

Synopsis:
THE debut of 2023. A compulsive and timely exploration of the complicated nature of memory and trauma, power and consent, victimhood and shame.

'That place has been my whole life. Everything I thought I knew about myself was constructed in those few months I spent within touching distance of the sea. Everything I am is because Alistair loved me.'

Rachel has been in love with Alistair since she was seventeen. Even though she hasn't seen him for sixteen years and she's now married to someone else. Even though she was a teenager when they met. Even though he is twenty years older than her. She's found it impossible to forget their summer together on a remote, sun-trapped Greek island. Until now.

When Rachel unexpectedly reconnects with a girl that she knew back then, she is forced to re-examine her memories of that golden summer and confront the truth about her relationship with Alistair and about her time working for an enigmatic and wealthy man on the island. And when Alistair returns, the pull of the past could prove impossible to resist...

🌿
I always enjoy Elizabeth Noble’s books. They’re so intuitive and full of emotion. This book looks at 6 couples who have been friends for 20 years. They’ve shared so much: holidays, their children growing up together, illnesses, but now they’re facing something that threatens to blow the friendships apart as an affair within the group causes shockwaves for everyone.
🌿
Noble’s books are often big ones. This was almost 500 pages. What I liked about Other People’s Husbands is that it was so immersive and it really pulled me into the lives of the friends and their families. The author writes in depth and I felt like I got to know all the characters and understood their lives and what mattered to them. I also considered how it must have felt to find out about the affair, both from the point of view of the wronged spouses but also the friends who have been there for each other for so long. It didn’t just affect the two couples but their friends and wider families too.
🌿
It’s also a tear-jerker in places, beautifully written on the subject of grief and betrayal, yet ultimately also uplifting and thought-provoking. I came away feeling hopeful for the characters’ future and it showed that things are never quite as clear-cut as you might think when it comes to the complexities of relationships and close friendships.
🌿
I thought this was a really lovely read that I enjoyed picking up very much indeed. I closed the book feeling deeply satisfied by this engrossing and relatable story.
🌿

New review: A Place to Call Home by Lizzie Page. P New review: A Place to Call Home by Lizzie Page. Published by Bookouture and out now.
✨
Hurrah for Miss Newton!
✨
Clara Newton is the housemother of Shilling Grange Children’s Home. She had rather a shaky start in the position in book one of this series, The Orphanage, but in this second instalment she’s more sure of herself and what the children in her care need from her. However, bad news is on the horizon and when she learns that the home is to be sold and the children scattered far and wide (Australia no less!) she must try to find them the homes they have been looking for before it’s too late.
✨
She’s also dealing with matters of the heart. The man she fell for in book one has done a disappearing act. Can anyone else live up to him?
✨
A Place to Call Home is another lovely read with writing that just kept pulling me along and characters that were calling out to me to give them my attention. Clara is brilliant. She’s a bit wobbly at times but always manages to save the day one way or another. The children themselves have had their characters built up incredibly well by Lizzie Page, each of them unique and special, and I was rooting for them and Clara to find a solution to the situation they found themselves in.
✨
I do adore Lizzie Page’s writing. I think it’s the inimitable mixture of dry humour, heartbreaking sorrow and stories that seem relatable yet distinctive that makes me love them so much. I’m now really keen to read book three, An Orphan’s Song, and see what’s next for Clara and her brood. A Place to Call Home proved that there’s plenty of life left in the tales of the Shilling Grange gang.
✨
Thank you to the author who very kindly sent me a signed copy of the book.

Ad/PR product. New review: The Serial Killer's Dau Ad/PR product. New review: The Serial Killer's Daughter by Alice Hunter. Published by Avon and out now.
🦋
Jenny Johnson is a vet in a small village in Devon. As a serial killer’s daughter, she’s used to keeping herself to herself because she doesn’t want anyone to know. When a local woman is taken off the street Jenny is concerned about her past coming back to haunt her.
🦋
Compounding Jenny’s worries is the fact that she is having blackouts, periods during the night when she has no idea what she’s been doing, and she starts to question her own behaviour. Jenny is a classic unreliable narrator and I honestly didn’t know what to make of her.
🦋
Alice Hunter’s story is a solid psychological thriller that kept me interested throughout. The short chapters helped to build up the pace and the back and forth between Jenny, her husband Mark, and an unknown narrator, really ramped up the tension, asking the reader to consider whether being related to a serial killer makes you more likely to be one yourself. The snippets from Jenny’s childhood were fascinating and macabre too.
🦋
I really enjoyed The Serial Killer’s Daughter. It was full of suspense. If you’re worried that you haven’t yet read The Serial Killer’s Wife, Hunter’s first book, then don’t be as they don’t follow on. I thought the ending of this one was clever and could spawn a whole new book!
🦋

Ad/PR product. New review: Operation Moonlight by Ad/PR product. New review: Operation Moonlight by Louise Morrish. Published by Century and out now.
🌕
Operation Moonlight is a gorgeous dual timeline story about one woman’s bravery in World War II.
🌕
In 2018 Betty is about to celebrate her 100th birthday and somewhat reluctantly accepts an invitation to join a society for other centenarians. This, along with discoveries made by Betty’s carer Tali, bring back Betty’s memories of her time as an SOE agent in 1944, when she parachuted into France for a dangerous mission.
🌕
Each timeline is equally riveting in different ways. The wartime story is nail-bitingly gripping, from Betty’s recruitment and training to her time in France where she puts her life on the line for her country. The 2018 story is not quite so edge of the seat, but is a delightful story of a woman and her carer, and the approaching finale of a long life lived.
🌕
It’s such a lovely debut novel, moving and enthralling, and such an important storyline to remind us of the courageous acts that helped bring the war to an end. Betty’s heroism shines through not just in 1944 but throughout the remainder of her life and I thought she was a brilliant and feisty character. I also loved the side story of Tali and how Betty gave her the courage to live her own life too.
🌕
Louise Morrish is a very talented writer and has obviously researched the SOE agents’ part in the war meticulously. I can’t wait to see what she writes next. Operation Moonlight was a real joy to read from start to finish.
🌕
Thank you to the publishers for the review copy of the book.

Ad/PR product. New review: The Family Remains by L Ad/PR product. New review: The Family Remains by Lisa Jewell. Published by Century tomorrow!
✨
First off, I just want to say that this book is BRILLIANT! Buy it! If you haven’t read The Family Upstairs first then you absolutely should but you can read The Family Remains as a standalone. What you need to know from the first book is recapped but I did go looking for some spoilers online as a reminder.
✨
The book begins with a bag of bones being found on the banks of the Thames by a mud-larker. The bones lead DI Samuel Owusu to link it to the house in Chelsea where people died and a baby was found, alone upstairs. We follow a brother and sister as the past catches up with them, and a young woman who finds herself in a difficult relationship. I don’t think I can say much more about the story because it unfolds so perfectly with only those bare bones as a synopsis that to go into more detail would be a shame.
✨
I’ve always loved Lisa Jewell’s books and I think The Family Remains is definitely one of my favourites. It’s expertly plotted and brilliantly complex, with tangled family relationships being at the heart of the story, and yet that complexity doesn’t mean it’s hard to follow. I think because the writing and the story are so good I was just happy to let it lead me wherever it wanted to take me, and what an incredibly twisty journey that was.
✨
This book is very much character-driven and they truly are fantastic creations, so absolutely compelling that I didn’t want to take my eyes off the page. This is a domestic thriller from the queen of dark mystery that absolutely gripped me, with short chapters that kept up a fast pace and a fabulous story with a really clever ending that made me smile. I absolutely loved it.
✨
Thank you to the publishers for the gorgeous spredgy proof.

Ad/PR product. New review: Good Husbands by Cate R Ad/PR product. New review: Good Husbands by Cate Ray. Published by September Publishing and out now.
✨
Good Husbands is a really thought-provoking and gripping read. It begins with three women: Jess, Priyanka and Stephanie, each receiving a letter stating that their husbands raped the writer’s mother 20 years earlier. The women have different reactions to the letter. Jess is immediately horrified and questions all she’s ever known about her husband. Priyanka feels her husband is a good man who was there for her in a crisis so it takes her a lot to think of her husband as a rapist. Stephanie’s first reaction is to bury her head in the sand and try and forget about the letter.
✨
All the way through the book I was putting myself in the women’s shoes, wondering how I would react if I got such a letter. I think you don’t ever know unless you are in that situation but this is very much a book that got me thinking. The women come together to start to look into the allegation more, and they gradually learn to deal with it and make decisions about where their futures lie.
✨
It’s a powerful read, and a moving one at times. It took me a little settling into the three narratives but it felt very real and relevant, and whilst I think it has a slow burn to it I found myself really drawn into the story and thoroughly hooked on it. It felt original and smart. I was gripped reading about the women as they carry on their day to day lives, going to work, looking after their children, all the while dealing with a ticking bomb that’s about to explode.
✨
Cate Ray is an excellent writer, encouraging and challenging the reader to ask themselves ‘what would I do?’. The moral dilemma that lies within Good Husbands is whether the past influences the present and whether you can live with a partner’s mistake that he made before he met you. Is he, in fact, a Good Husband? Compelling stuff!
✨
