Today's two books are linked by letters. #LoveAndSaffron is a wonderful story of friendship, food and flavours. #LetterFromNewYork is Helene Hanff's stories of her life in New York, composed for a British radio audience, each broadcast a love letter to the city.

Ad/PR product. New review: Good Material by Dolly Ad/PR product. New review: Good Material by Dolly Alderton. Published by @penguinfigtree and out now.
✨
Good Material follows Andy as he navigates through what feels like the wasteland of his life following his break-up with Jen. He really loves her and thought they were set for life so when Jen breaks it off with him he’s unable to understand what’s gone wrong. Over the next few months they disentangle themselves from each other in all the usual messy ways that the break-up of a long-term relationship brings.
✨
The first thing to say about this book is that it is genuinely laugh out loud funny. I love a book that makes me guffaw and I don’t come across them very often but this one is so cleverly sharp and witty that the laughs came often. It’s brilliantly observed by Andy who comes across as a slightly hapless male, a part-time stand-up comedian who can’t quite make a living from it and so is flitting from job to job, never quite making it to the heady heights of being a fully-fledged grown-up.
✨
It’s a bit different to see a story like this told almost entirely from the viewpoint of the male. I loved Andy and whilst I could see his flaws I also couldn’t help feeling sorry for him. The ending is a nice touch and put a lot into perspective for me, as a kind of onlooker to the break-up.
✨
I thought Good Material was superb. It’s honest and real, hilarious yet also poignant, the characters are spot on creations and I didn’t want the story to end. It’s one of my top reads of the year.
✨
Thank you to the publishers for the proof copy of the book.

Ad/PR product. New #BlogTour review: Boundary Road Ad/PR product. New #BlogTour review: Boundary Road by Ami Rao. Published by Everything With Words and out now.
🔴
Boundary Road is an innovative and compelling slice of life story set mostly on a London bus. Aron Wilson has just started a new job and gets the number 13 home, a journey that will take him 90 minutes. During a busy rush hour Aron encounters a variety of folk and has interactions with some of them. Also on the bus is Nora, making her way home too. These two main characters form the central point around which the plot revolves.
🔴
I loved the sound of this character-driven book and I wasn’t disappointed. It felt like being a fly on the bus window, dropping into all the different conversations. All of human life can be found on a London bus in rush hour and I enjoyed the diversity and the communication between the passengers.
🔴
I felt immersed in the enclosed environment, the multi-cultural characters, the sights and sounds, the thoughts and opinions. All so evocative and the dialogue felt authentic and honest. I smiled along with the characters but then every so often something would happen that would give me a jolt and one incident in particular left me reeling. I don’t think I’ll forget it in a hurry.
🔴
Boundary Road hits hard. It’s a reminder of the complexity of human beings and their emotions and it delivers a powerful message about the fragility of life.
🔴
Thank you to the publisher for the review copy of the book and for asking me to be a part of the tour.

Ad/PR product. New review: Joe Nuthin's Guide to L Ad/PR product. New review: Joe Nuthin's Guide to Life by @helenfisher_author. Published by @simonschusteruk and out now.
✨
Joe Nuthin’s Guide to Life has to be this year’s most life-affirming book. I thought it was heart-warming and a complete delight to read.
✨
Joe-Nathan likes what he knows and knows what he likes. He lives with his mum, watches Friends every evening, works at The Compass Store putting the go-backs back on the shelves, and likes his routine. If something isn’t quite right, a wonky calendar, a tin with the label the wrong way round, it makes him sweat and feel very uncomfortable. Unexpected events beyond his control and him trying to do the right thing in challenging situations leave him feeling unsettled. Referring to the yellow book of life advice from his mum, Joe-Nathan steps right out of his comfort zone.
✨
I loved Joe-Nathan. He’s an utterly adorable character. He takes everything literally which causes a bit of eye-rolling amongst his friends and colleagues, but he’s got a beautiful soul and his behaviour made me feel all warm and fuzzy. He struggles with Mean-Charlie at work who calls him Joe-Nuthin but he has made a new friend in Chloe, who sticks up for him.
✨
Everything about this book is lovely. The characters are perfect, flawed but likeable, and there’s empathy in Helen Fisher’s writing which invites the reader into Joe-Nathan’s life and makes them never want to leave. This is a story about friendship and what it really means, and how to be a good friend when it’s really difficult to do so. The balance of humour and seriousness is perfectly executed and this is an all-round beautiful book that was a joy from start to finish.
✨
Thank you @beckyhunterbooks for the proof copy.

Ad/PR product. New review: The Christmas Appeal by Ad/PR product. New review: The Christmas Appeal by Janice Hallett. Published by @viper.books and out now.
❄️
The Christmas Appeal takes us back to Lower Lockwood, the location of Janice Hallett’s debut, The Appeal. This time, amateur dramatics group, The Fairway Players, are putting on a Christmas panto, Jack and the Beanstalk.
❄️
As is Hallett’s signature style, the story is told almost entirely in emails and texts, a device which makes this an extremely pacy read indeed. The main protagonists are Sarah-Jane and Kevin MacDonald, co-chairs of the group as well as being director and producer respectively, and Celia and Joel Halliday (don’t forget Joel’s OBE, whatever you do!) who quite clearly wish they were in charge. Celia is a brilliant and horrible character, undermining and backstabbing Sarah-Jane at every turn, one of those people who send a very boastful round robin every year. The huge fibreglass beanstalk and the dead body throw something of a spanner in the works and turn the panto into an unintentional farce.
❄️
As we first saw in The Appeal, Roderick Tanner KC (now retired) enlists the help of Femi and Charlotte, who are now establishing themselves as criminal lawyers, to read through all the evidence and come to a conclusion, just as the reader is invited to do. I thoroughly enjoyed following events in Lower Lockwood and I found it really amusing. There’s all of the worst of human life in this book, a cast of unlikeable but compelling characters. For a Christmas book with a difference I highly recommend The Christmas Appeal – it’s funny, festive, fast and fabulous, and hugely enjoyable.
❄️
Thank you @rachelmayquin for the review package.

Ad/PR product. New review: The Last Train Home by Ad/PR product. New review: The Last Train Home by Elle Cook. Published by @centurybooksuk today! Happy publication day 🎉🥳
🚃
What if you met the right person but at the wrong time?
🚃
Abbie and Tom get chatting on the last tube train home one night. They really hit it off but moments later something happens that will change their lives forever. It will bring them closer together but circumstances will keep them apart. Over the course of seven years we follow the lives they make for themselves and the choices they make.
🚃
I thought this was a truly gorgeous read. It’s such a lovely story that pulled me in right from the very beginning and I loved Tom and Abbie who felt so real to me as they traversed their way through life’s challenges and delights. Elle Cook has a way of writing that is so easy to read and pacy and yet conveys so accurately what it’s like to make life-changing decisions and live with the consequences. The story is told in first-person narrative by Tom and Abbie and so we really get to the root of how they feel about each other and about other people in their lives.
🚃
At the heart of the book is an enduring love and that’s what made it such a wonderful read for me. I do love a good love story and this is a VERY good love story. It’s romantic, it’s heartfelt, it’s emotional and it’s joyful. I’ve read both of Elle Cook’s books now and I adored them both. She excels at ‘spanner in the works’ plots and I need more! The Last Train Home is a beautiful storyline with superb writing and characters that I didn’t want to let go.

Ad/PR product. New review: The Day We Left by Caro Ad/PR product. New review: The Day We Left by Caroline Bond. Published by #CorvusBooks and out now.
✨
The Day We Left begins with Lizzie, 31 weeks pregnant with twins, starting the day in a panic because she’s overlaid. Later on that day, she unexpectedly goes into early labour. The twins, Oli and Joe, are tiny and have to spend weeks in the hospital. Fast forward sixteen years and Lizzie is now Beth, living with Oli who has grown up strong, and Joe, always the weaker of the twins. We follow the boys through their twenties until they (and us) are confronted with the secrets of their past.
✨
The story moves along nicely, aided by lovely short chapters, as each twin tries to find their own way in life. Whilst Joe seems to have the harder time of it, it was interesting to witness Oli’s side of things and how he often felt pushed aside. Caroline Bond always writes family dynamics really well and the relationship between the twins, and between them and their mother, were really intriguing.
✨
There are some hefty issues in this story but it’s still a really light and easy read. There are no real surprises but this is more about family and how circumstances and decisions affect everyone involved, rather than twists and turns. This story felt true to life, with all the ups and downs that come with it. I enjoyed The Day We Left.

New review: The Hundred and Ninety-Nine Steps by M New review: The Hundred and Ninety-Nine Steps by Michel Faber. Published by @canongatebooks and out now.
✨
The Hundred and Ninety-Nine Steps was the perfect book when I wanted a quick read but even though it’s short (116 pages) it still packs plenty in. Siân is in Whitby after joining the archaeological dig being undertaken at the Abbey to excavate sixty skeletons from the grounds. Pausing for a moment half way up the steps, she meets Magnus and his dog, Hadrian. Not only do the pair bring some level of companionship to Siân, but Magnus also provides her with a historical artefact containing a mystery which gives her a chance to use her skills as a conservator.
✨
This is such an engaging and well-written novella. Obviously, the setting is a big part of what makes it special, offering the centuries of historical importance of Whitby Abbey against the backdrop of the beautiful seaside town. Alongside this is the story itself, which is perfectly formed and was of so much interest to me. I loved the contemporary narrative and the friendship between Siân and Magnus (not forgetting the wondrous Hadrian) next to the historical discoveries. Siân herself is a woman of some mystery and the progression of the story offers explanations for so much of the way she is. I liked Magnus and I’m enjoying thinking about how the two characters’ relationship may have progressed beyond the end of the novella.
✨
I now have an urge to revisit Whitby but in the meantime this book has been a little gem of a read.

Ad/PR product. New review: The Secrets of Mill Hou Ad/PR product. New review: The Secrets of Mill House by Anne Wyn Clark. Published by @avonbooksuk and out now.
✨
The Secrets of Mill House is a multi-layered story that became more and more intriguing as it went on. It begins in the 1970s with a kidnapped baby in Flora Lanyon’s small community, a shocking event that she never forgets. Flora had a tough start to life with loss and abuse sadly forming a large part of it. Years later, in 2001, she is drawn for various reasons to a job at a watermill, looking after Agnes Homity, but with the sinister presence of Abraham Homity and the couple’s son, Hector, Flora quickly wonders if she’s made a big mistake even setting foot in Mill House.
✨
It’s actually really hard to talk about all the different strands of this book without ending up going into too much detail. There is such a lot going on and I really liked that about it, as Flora made more and more discoveries about the past and about the Homity family. Alongside the 2001 story we follow Flora as she grows up, and we witness some of the events that eventually lead her to Mill House.
✨
I loved the eerie setting of the watermill. Not only are there some strange things going on there but the idea of the wheel and the water surging around it gave me the creeps. The story itself is quite disturbing at times and full of twists and turns. There were no big surprises for me but I enjoyed finding out if what I thought had happened was correct.
✨
I was reminded of some of Lesley’s Pearse’s more recent books when I read this one so if you like those then you’ll like The Secrets of Mill House. I certainly did. It’s atmospheric and unsettling and it kept me gripped.
✨

Ad/PR product. New review: Water by @johnboyneauth Ad/PR product. New review: Water by @johnboyneauthor. To be published by @doubledayukbooks on 2nd November.
💧
Water is the first in a set of four novellas, each one focused around one of the elements. It is no less hard-hitting for its brevity. Vanessa Carvin travels to a small Irish island after leaving her home in Dublin and immediately changes her name to Willow Hale, knowing that the islanders will be curious as to why she’s chosen to go there and live such a solitary lifestyle. As the story unfolds we learn why she has fled there and the role of water in her narrative.
💧
I was hooked on this book from page one and it didn’t loosen its grip on me until I turned the last page. It’s completely compelling and has an emotional intensity that put me right into Willow’s shoes, living an isolated life away from the horrors that she was trying to escape, with the time and space to consider whether deep down she knew what her husband was capable of.
💧
There’s so much that is special about Water. An island location is always a hit with me, and in this case it’s a very small, closed community that Willow chooses to enter, both perfect for its solitude but potentially inviting interest in why she’s there. Willow’s relationship with her daughter and the beautiful redemptive exchange with her towards the end of the book was emotive, and I also particularly liked another relationship that she developed during her time on the island.
💧
I don’t think John Boyne could write a bad book if he tried. Every one is a triumph in its own right, unique and perfectly formed. I’m looking forward now to reading Earth, which features a minor character from Water, and promises to be just as powerful a read. In the meantime, I heartily recommend Water for its uncompromising and thought-provoking story and the superb writing.
💧
Thank you to the publishers for the gorgeous proof package.

Ad/PR product. New #BlogTour review - Winter's Wis Ad/PR product. New #BlogTour review - Winter's Wishfall by @cerihoulbrook. Published by @bwpublishing and out now.
📜
The premise of Winter’s Wishfall had me at ‘archiving job’ and ‘tiny Scottish island’, two components that I felt were guaranteed to be a hit with me, and then totally blew me away with everything else that makes up this heartwarming and quirky festive read.
📜
Ellie Lancaster applies for the job advertised by twins Clementine and Cole Jones and promptly finds herself on a boat heading for the island. It isn’t what she expected but she soon starts to settle in, loving the work, the island and the people she lives and works with. It’s certainly an unusual job, something she discovers on her first day when she’s escorted into a cavern and invited to start cataloguing scrolls, all of which are addressed to Father Christmas. It soon becomes clear to Ellie that the island is a magical place indeed.
📜
Winter’s Wishfall is a beautifully written book, executed to perfection. It never trips over into the twee, always maintaining a sense of reality and normality amidst the mysterious and enchanting. I loved Ellie as a main character and found her likeable and kind-hearted, but I thought all the characters were wonderful and so well-drawn. Clementine is a celebrity baker and her creations added warmth and flavour. Where she is more spontaneous and fun, Cole is the more serious of the twins, a lawyer who understands the need for confidentiality agreements. Then there’s Uncle Joe, a gentle sweetheart of a man.
📜
This book has it all. Characters to care for, an appealing and spellbinding magical realism plot, and a windswept and beautiful setting. It brings to life the fairy-tale of Christmas and wraps itself around the reader like a warm blanket. I completely and utterly adored it.

Ad/PR product. New review: An Invitation to the Ke Ad/PR product. New review: An Invitation to the Kennedys by Emily Hourican. Published by @hachetteireland and out now.
✨
Emily Hourican’s Guinness Girls series has caught my eye before but An Invitation to the Kennedys, which is book four, is the first I have read. Whilst I think it would have been nice to have the background of the previous three books, I never felt like I’d missed out on anything by starting with this one so it works fine as a standalone novel.
✨
In fact, what drew me to it most of all was the fact that it features Kathleen ‘Kick’ Kennedy. Best known as one of the Kennedy clan (sister to JFK and Bobby), she’s most interesting to me because of her connection to Chatsworth and I’ve always thought her quite a glamorous addition to the Cavendish family, despite the fact that it seems she was more of a down to earth tomboy.
✨
In this book, Joe Kennedy, Kick’s father, is appointed as the US Ambassador to the Court of St James and so some of the family are in Britain which is where she meets Billy Cavendish and some of the Guinness clan. Much of the book takes place at the country seat of Chips Channon and his wife, Honor. Honor’s sister, Lady Brigid Guinness, is the same age as Kick and so a friendship naturally ensues. There are all the ups and downs that comes with being in society in the 1930s and the war on the horizon becomes the elephant in the room with political manoeuvres coming into play.
✨
This is a stylish and sophisticated story set in a high-status world. It’s a story of the upper classes, two prestigious and well-known families, and what happens when they converge. The complexities of social niceties against the stirring emotions, both politically and romantically, provide quite the backdrop to an interesting time for the characters, Europe and worldwide. Hourican writes engagingly and with confidence about fascinating characters. I thought this was a glittering and evocative read.
✨
