SOMEONE KILLED YOUR DAUGHTER. SOMEONE YOU KNOW…
Your daughter isn’t answering your calls.
She’s not replying to your messages. You rush to her house.
She’s slumped in the basement, dying and alone. You desperately call for help.
She whispers a single word: ‘pushed’.Someone is keeping secrets.
And it must be someone you know…
A few years ago I read and loved Erin Kinsley’s first book, Found. I’ve always meant to read more of her books and so was really keen to read Someone You Know, especially after reading the brief, yet gripping, synopsis.
Dee’s hasn’t heard from her daughter, Natalie, for a few days. Natalie isn’t answering Dee’s calls so she goes over to her house and finds her at the bottom of the cellar steps close to death. It seems like she’s fallen until Natalie manages to say one word which changes everything.
I went into Someone You Know thinking it was going to be a thriller but I found it to be more psychological/domestic noir, a genre I love. Whilst some of the police investigation is covered, it’s based a lot more around how Natalie’s family cope in the aftermath of her death, and who the culprit might be. It’s full of twists and turns as I thought one person had done it and then another and then another! It also follows an investigative journalist, Gabby, who does some digging into what happened.
My favourite character was Wilf and I loved his side-story. For me this wasn’t a murder mystery but a story of a small community and the knock-on effects of a tragedy in its midst. A relatively slow-burning start built up into a thoughtful story that I found compelling with flawed characters who felt real. I really enjoyed Someone You Know and this time I really must read more of Erin Kinsley’s books.
