New review: Magpie by @sophiedraperwriter

Sophie Draper quite clearly has a very particular style, one which works well for her. Magpie has so many of the same features that her previous book, Cuckoo, had. First of all, the Derbyshire setting. I loved this as it’s a landscape I’m quite familiar with and the author portrays it beautifully. Magpie is set around a reservoir, one where a village had to be submerged to create it just like the real life Derwent Village which was submerged to make way for Ladybower reservoir. The mention of the church spire appearing at times of low water is really eerie.

There’s also the sense of foreboding, the suspenseful nature not particularly of the story (although that has some suspense) but more the main character’s own narrative which is potentially unreliable. Claire is a wife and mother and seems to have lost sight of anything else she might ever have been. She’s married to Duncan, once her soulmate but now she’s planning her escape from him. Joe, their son, is now 18 but troubled and she wants to make sure Joe will come with her. She most definitely doesn’t want to leave him with Duncan.

The story is told in before and after (after what, we do not know) and I must admit that even for me, who loves books that chop and change times like this, it did get rather confusing and maybe a bit overcomplicated. I’m not sure it was all strictly needed and I don’t think it would have lost anything if it had been simplified a bit.

There were a couple of twists towards the end, not least the revelation of what the after scenes were following on from. It wasn’t a complete surprise as I had my suspicions but I hadn’t really allowed them to come to the surface so it was still rather unexpected. I thought it was a well executed development.

Overall this is a book that has a lot going for it. The Derbyshire backdrop was fabulous and the unfolding of the story was effective. This is psychological fiction that gets to the heart of a family in crisis, what led them there and what happens next. Don’t go into it expecting heart-pounding drama. Go into it expecting a steady and dark tale and you won’t be disappointed.

I'm doing mini reviews today of two non-fiction books. The Secret Life of Books by Professor Tom Mole is a beautiful book for any book lover. There are eight chapters looking at, for instance, ‘the things we do to books and the things they do to us’, or perhaps ‘How books shape institutions, societies and nations’. Letters to the Earth is a collection of 100 letters from various people, some well known and some not, writing to a planet in climate change crisis. It's a love letter to the earth and a plea for change.

New review: The Naseby Horses by Dominic Brownlow

The Naseby Horses is Dominic Brownlow’s debut novel and judging by what I have read he has quite a career ahead of him. His writing style is lyrical, ethereal and just beautiful. Having said that, I’m not sure I completely ‘got’ it. I think it’s a book that may benefit from a second reading as I don’t think I took everything in this first time. I’d recommend taking the time to read it slowly and to immerse yourself in every description, every conversation and every direction that it takes you in.

The book begins on day three, that is the third day of Charlotte’s disappearance. Her brother, Simon, our protagonist, is returning home after a severe epileptic seizure around the time she disappeared. I thought this was a really clever idea on the author’s part, to throw us right into the middle like that. Simon is 17, clearly clever and suffering very badly with his condition. All the way through the story he’s seeing auras and things that may or may not be there. This could well be his epilepsy or it could be that he has a hint of the supernatural about him. He and Charlotte are twins so there is that extra element, that bond between them. He’s sure Charlotte must still be alive somewhere.

He’s a fascinating character, with a strong interest in birds which appear over and over again in this book. He starts to discover folklore surrounding the Fenland village where he lives and the possibility of a curse which could, if you believe it, be responsible for Charlotte’s disappearance. It’s such an intriguing premise for a story and although I trusted Simon I also saw that his illness could make him unreliable. He can’t be sure if what he saw or heard that night was real or not.

Brownlow has a talent for sumptuous and evocative descriptions. I really marvelled in his scene-setting and the way he brought the Fens to life. I didn’t find to be the easiest of reads, it’s quite intense and I think there’s a lot lurking under the surface that perhaps that second read would draw out, but I also found it to be unique, clever and moving. A triumphant debut!

New review: Woman in the Edge by @sbaileybooks.

What an intriguing tagline this book has. What would possess a woman to give a baby to a stranger on a train platform and then jump in front of a train. That’s what Morgan Kincaid finds herself wondering after Nicole Markham does that exact thing.

Morgan is a woman who is recovering after a traumatic time. She’s lost her husband but more than that, she’s dealing with the mess he left behind. When she’s given the baby she is taken aback but she’s also always wanted a child of her own and so for a split second she revels in the possibilities.

There’s more to all this than meets the eye. What is the link between Morgan and Nicole? Morgan can’t think of any link at all. She sets to trying to find out more, especially when she finds herself suspected of pushing Nicole in front of the train.

This is a relatively short book at 288 pages but it’s got a lot packed into it. We see Nicole before the incident and Morgan afterwards in alternating chapters which really help to bring the threads together. I really liked how Morgan’s findings tied in with the lead up to Nicole’s death.

Woman on the Edge is a story that is fast-paced and full of tension. I did see the outcome from a mile off but I still enjoyed getting there and seeing if I was correct. Thinking back, I’m not sure the reason for what happened was quite as fully explained as I would have expected though. I did enjoy this book a lot. I found it quite gripping and sad really, about two women dealing with serious issues not exactly of their making.
